Understanding Sikalastic® TC 235: What It Is, Where It’s Used, and How to Apply It Correctly

When it comes to protecting pedestrian and vehicular deck surfaces, choosing the right top coat — and using it correctly — is just as important as selecting the system beneath it. Sikalastic® TC 235 is a manufacturer-designed polyurethane top coat intended for use within Sikalastic® Traffic 1500 Low VOC deck coating systems, and understanding its proper application helps ensure long-term performance and durability.

This guide is designed to help customers understand what Sikalastic® TC 235 is, where it’s used, and what conditions must be met for proper installation, all based directly on Sika’s published guidelines.

What Is Sikalastic® TC 235?

Sikalastic® TC 235 is a single-component, moisture-curing, aliphatic polyurethane top coat. It serves as the UV-resistant, waterproofing wear layer in Sikalastic® Traffic 1500 Low VOC systems and is engineered to protect underlying membranes from exposure, abrasion, and weathering.

Because it is a one-component product, it does not require on-site mixing of multiple parts (except when using Tint Base), helping reduce application complexity while maintaining consistent performance when applied correctly.

Typical Applications

When installed as part of an approved Sikalastic® system, TC 235 is commonly used in:

  • Balconies and plaza decks
  • Stadiums and pedestrian decks
  • Parking garages
  • Commercial and institutional construction
  • Plywood deck and restoration projects

It is important to note that Sikalastic® TC 235 must be used within a compatible Sikalastic® Traffic system and is not intended to function as a standalone coating

Key Performance Characteristics

Sikalastic® TC 235 is formulated to deliver:

  • UV resistance for long-term color and surface protection
  • Low VOC content, meeting regulatory requirements
  • High elongation and tensile strength, allowing flexibility with movement
  • Durable waterproofing performance when installed as part of a complete system

These properties are only achieved when the product is applied according to Sika’s published system requirements and limitations.

Storage and Conditioning Requirements

Before application, proper storage and conditioning are critical:

  • Store material indoors in dry conditions
  • Storage temperature must remain between 40°F and 95°F (4°C–35°C)
  • Material should be conditioned to 65–85°F (18–30°C) before use

Cold material increases viscosity, which can negatively impact coverage and finish quality.

Application Temperature & Environmental Conditions

Sika specifies strict environmental limits to ensure proper curing and adhesion:

  • Minimum ambient and substrate temperature: 40°F (4°C)
  • Maximum application temperature: 95°F (35°C)
  • Relative humidity: Must not exceed 95%
  • Substrate temperature: Must be at least 5°F above the dew point

The substrate must be clean, dry, and free of moisture, and application should not proceed if rain is expected within 8–12 hours.

Coverage and Cure Expectations

When applied at the manufacturer’s recommended thickness:

  • Coverage ranges from 55–80 sq. ft. per gallon, depending on mil thickness
  • Typical cure time is 12–14 hours at 73°F and 50% RH
  • Pedestrian traffic: After 48 hours
  • Vehicular traffic: After 72 hours

Opening surfaces to traffic before full cure may result in coating damage or premature failure.

Important Limitations Customers Should Know

To avoid performance issues, Sikalastic® TC 235:

  • Must not be applied to damp, wet, frosted, or porous substrates
  • Must not be thinned with solvents
  • Is not designed for continuous immersion
  • May be stained by vehicle fluids or high-performance tires if spills are not promptly removed

Additionally, Tint Base versions are intended for pedestrian use only and are not suitable for vehicular traffic.

Why Following Manufacturer Guidelines Matters

Sikalastic® TC 235 is a high-performance product, but like all coating systems, its success depends on proper system selection, surface preparation, environmental conditions, and cure time. Deviating from manufacturer instructions can lead to adhesion failure, appearance issues, or reduced service life.

For project-specific questions — including unusual substrates, existing coatings, or environmental challenges — Sika recommends consulting Sika Technical Services before application.

Sikalastic® TC 235 is a proven, professional-grade polyurethane top coat when used exactly as designed within approved Sikalastic® Traffic systems. Understanding its limitations, environmental requirements, and curing expectations helps ensure a successful installation and long-lasting protection.

If you have questions about system compatibility or proper product selection, our team is always happy to help guide you based on manufacturer recommendations.
