Description

Metacaulk Joint Strip is a flexible, highly intumescent firestop material designed for concrete and masonry floor and wall control joints up to 2" (51 mm) wide. When exposed to heat, the material forms a strong char that helps prevent the passage of flame, smoke, and hot gases between control joints. It can also be used with plastic pipe penetrations and is suitable for applications where a fire-rated control joint is required. The 3" Joint Strip is supplied in 82-foot rolls, with 2 rolls per case.

Features & Benefits

  • Highly Intumescent: Multiple-stage intumescent material expands when exposed to heat and forms a strong protective char.
  • Fire, Smoke & Hot Gas Protection: Designed to help prevent the passage of flame, smoke, and hot gases through control joints.
  • Flexible Material: Flexible construction accommodates applicable control joint applications and simplifies placement during installation.
  • Easy to Install: Designed for installation with standard backer rod and an approved architectural caulk or sealant.
  • Eliminates Mineral Wool: Does not require mineral wool or other expensive, difficult-to-install backing materials in applicable tested systems.
  • Multiple Fire-Rating Capabilities: Capable of use in 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-hour rated assemblies when installed according to the applicable UL system.
  • Movement Capability: Class II and III movement with 25% compression and extension.
  • UL Classified: Tested to UL 2079 and additional ASTM, UL, and CAN/ULC standards.
  • Sealant Versatility: Can be used with any UL-listed sealant as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Indefinite Shelf Life: Manufacturer states an indefinite shelf life when properly stored.

Recommended Applications

Metacaulk Joint Strip is intended for concrete and masonry floor and wall control joints up to 2" wide where a fire-rated control joint is required.

  • Concrete construction joints
  • Masonry construction joints
  • Floor and wall control joints
  • Stadium construction
  • Tilt-up panels
  • Curtain wall panels
  • Plastic pipe penetrations
  • Other concrete and masonry construction joint applications requiring a fire-rated control joint

Important: Although the Joint Strip itself is 3" wide, the manufacturer specifies use in control joints up to 2" wide. The 3" product width does not indicate a 3" maximum joint width.

Application Details

Surface Preparation

Clean all surfaces in the joint area to remove loose debris, dirt, oil, wax, grease, old caulking, and other contaminants.

Backer Rod Installation

For floor applications, install a separate base section of backer rod recessed approximately 2" below the top of the floor.

Joint Strip Installation

Bend and friction-fit the Metacaulk Joint Strip longitudinally into the joint, using the backer rod as the transport mechanism. Push the strip far enough into the joint to accommodate the required caulk depth.

Sealant Application

Gun, trowel, or pump the approved sealant to a minimum 1/4" depth on both sides of the wall or on the top of the floor over the backer rod.

Finishing

Trowel the sealant to the desired finish. Installation must follow the applicable tested UL system for complete installation requirements.

Installation Limitation

Use only in tested configurations or as recommended by RectorSeal. Always verify the applicable listed firestop system before installation.
